Construction Zone

There has been a house being built behind us for some time now. However, this week, the entire neighborhood appears to be under construction. It made for a rather interesting stroller ride with Caleb yesterday!

The road in front of our house - our driveway (#4) is on the left. I like the motorcycle tracks right through the dirt pile.

Looking down out street in the opposite direction.

The view from our back balcony, outside of Caleb's room - construction on the right, living quarters on the left.

Caleb This Week

Pumpkin soup + peek-a-boo = a great time + a very messy little boy!

Caleb has figured out how to stand up in his ducky tub so we moved him into the big tub. It took him about 10 minutes to figure out he could pull himself to standing in that one too...

Our little fish.

I pulled out the Little People Noah's Ark from Gramma Alvina - Caleb (or maybe Mommy?) were bored with the toys already out.

Parties

Our big social events right now are attending 1st birthday parties. They are lots of fun for both Caleb and us. Caleb gets to play with lots of different toys and we get to visit with our friends and enjoy great food and birthday cake. Yesterday, was Piper's 1st birthday (Caleb's friend from the USA) and we celebrated with a great spread which included some very tasty crab cakes and both white and chocolate cake.

Waving

Caleb cannot stop waving! It all came together a couple days ago when we were leaving a shop and he waved goodbye to the nice lady who took our money. I said 'wave goodbye' and he did it (of course, there had been much practice up to this point) and since then, he has been a waving machine. He spent the entire 20 minute taxi ride into District 3 today waving at all the motorcycles as they went by!

Ho Tram

Maria planned a terrific escape this weekend to the Ho Tram Beach Resort from the endless rain drowning us in HCMC. We were pleasantly surprised to discover how lovely and clean the Ho Tram beach was being only a 2.5 hour drive from the city (previously we got our beach fix in Mui Ne, a five hour drive from HCMC).

We arrived for lunch on Saturday which was followed by Caleb's first dip in the ocean and then some time in the pool. We shared the cost of one nanny between three families so were able to enjoy drinks and dinner at the restaurant while the babies all slept. In fact, Caleb slept incredibly well and did not even make a peep until just after 6:00 am - it must have been the ocean air! On Sunday, we spent more time lying around the pool, getting a bit pink in the morning sun before departing for the city. It was a wonderful weekend with great friends (look for more photos on facebook).

He loved the watching the waves hit us and then he would watch them go all the way onto the beach.

9 Months

Caleb has finally been on the outside longer than the inside! At nine months, our little baby is not so little anymore. Caleb weighed in at 10.25 kg (22.5 lbs) which puts him in the 75th percentile. Not surprising to anyone, Caleb falls into the 90th percentile for length, measuring in at 75 cm.

Caleb spends his time dragging himself around (he does not use his knees to crawl) and can pull himself to standing. He loves walking with assistance. He has learned the words and sign for 'don't touch' because Mommy and Daddy say it numerous times a day when Caleb's little fingers find the dvd player. Caleb loves music and claps along whenever he hears a new song starting or someone starts to sing. He also loves playing peek-a-boo.

Busy Weekend

It was a busy weekend around the city for us. Saturday morning, we attended Steve and Ha's wedding ceremony and reception. Kevin was gift boat carrier so we were able to go to the small ceremony that usually only family is invited to in the morning. It was another cultural experience. We still cannot figure out exactly when the marriage happened and how it is all becomes official since the person who did all the talking was the videographer?!? Caleb is getting over a cold so he spent the day at home. The wedding reception was full of our favourite Vietnamese wedding moments: hired dancers, champagne fountain, loud music, exuberant MC, and lots of beer. One of my favourite things about Vietnamese weddings is that the bride and groom have three different outfits for the day. Our personal faves were Steve's white suit and white shoes! After the reception, I stopped off at a friend's house. I was planning on walking the three blocks home but Maria kindly doubled me on her bike. What a sight we were at midnight on the street.

Sunday morning came much too soon. We were up early and rushing about to get out to District 7 where Kevin was doing the 5 km Phu My Bridge Phun Run. Caleb and I were along for a walk. We met up with John (who was also running) and Bel and Louis so we could walk with them. Kevin finished in well under a half hour - nice run! We rushed off from District 7 to District 3 for our Sunday Tadpole Swim Lesson. Caleb, who had his morning snack in the car and had not slept at all on the bridge walk, was all smiles when he got in the pool. The lesson was great and afterwards, Caleb made it about a block before he was fast asleep in the car. All of us were in need of an afternoon nap before Kevin Haase and Adelina joined us for a bbq dinner and some trip planning. We are trying to organize a camper trip through New Zealand's South Island at the end of February so if anyone has any must-see suggestions, let us know!

And at the wedding reception. Still wearing the shoes...

Time to Move

I am excited to report that we are moving! When we first arrived in Vietnam, I said I would never live in a compound. I was determined to experience the Vietnamese culture and for over a year now, we have lived on a very local street. We wake up to the sound of cutlery being washed outside our master bedroom window as the local restaurant next door prepares for the breakfast rush of customers. We hear our landlord's mother's five dogs bark at the wind. And now, we spend the day planning Caleb's naps around when the jackhammer will stop, with the new houses being constructed directly behind us. All of this is not really that terrible and in many ways, we have come to love our little street and the people that frequent it... there is the lady who sells cafe sua da at a roadside stall and always says hello when Caleb and I are out for a walk, the mother of the 10-month old boy next door who always does a comparison between her baby and Caleb when we go past and there is the little girl who loves to greet me with her perfect English. Yesterday, a group of boys, living in what we think are university accommodations across the road from us, kindly stopped their game of street soccer so Caleb and I could pass by. But there are a few things that are not so enjoyable about our current house like the questionable electrical work. Just this past week, the tv remote started turning on the air conditioner but it won't stay on for longer than a couple minutes? The power cuts out every night and quite commonly, more than once. The generator does not supply enough power to our house in the event of a power failure (a common occurrence here). There are other safety issues too that we never thought too much about until we had Caleb, like propane tanks in the kitchen. Plus, as Caleb grows, outdoor space has become a priority and this is hard to find in a country with crazy traffic and few sidewalks (and where they do exist, they are used by motorcycles).

So, you probably know where this story is going by now... yep, we are moving into a compound: tree-lined streets that our stroller friendly, access to three swimming pools, a gym, children's soft playroom, tennis courts, a lovely restaurant across the road from us and no need for 24-hour security guards outside our door. Plus, we have an extra guest room so stop by!

Our new house - we move in October.

Caleb and Louis on Lily street in front of our new house. Louis, who is 3 days younger than Caleb, lives on the same street.

The Coffee Table Fort

I was pretty sure that it would not take Caleb too long to figure out that our coffee table is a perfect play area. A while ago I removed books and magazines that use to be stored on the bottom 'shelf' of the table. But now Caleb not only reaches under to grab things, he can crawl right up on the bottom shelf. Good practice for stairs, I guess!

Finally - I am in!

But now to get out...

Making a successful escape.

And cuddles with Mom before crawling (or more like dragging) off to explore a new corner of the house.
